Hits & Misses of 2016!!!
Out of more than two hundred Hindi films released in 2016 only
a dozen could deliver the goods, majority of them being biopics based on the
life of some person of immense repute. The stupendous success of film like
Airlift, Neerja, M S Dhoni: The Untold Story and Dangal drives home the point
that stories inspired by real people or real life incidents are here to stay.
Out of aforementioned four biopics M S Dhoni: The Untold Story and Dangal were
sports biopics, which took the box-office by fire and raked in a huge amount of
money for all the parties involved.
If we talk about the most successful films of the year 2016,
the Aamir Khan starrer sports biopic Dangal tops the charts. The
film, which released on 23rd December 2016, turned out to be an all Time
Blockbuster with Rs. 313.50 in its kitty. The film is still performing
extremely well, and it is expected to touch Rs. 400 Cr mark by the time it ends
its run at the ticket window. The Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan starrer Dear
Zindagi was also loved by the majority of people, especially in urban
centers. It earned a Hit tag after garnering an income of Rs. 68 Cr. Karan
Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil made Rs. 112 Cr as its lifetime collection
and entered the Hit zone. Ajay Devgn's most ambitious film Shivaay also
touched the right chord of the audience and with an income of Rs. 100.35 Cr
became a hit film. Courtroom drama, 'Pink' starring Amitabh Bachchan
and Taapsee Pannu is named one of the biggest superhits of 2016 with a
collection of Rs. 68 Cr. The film did not only earn well at the box-office, but
it also started a conversation about women rights and consent in our society. M
S Dhoni: The Untold Story also turned out to be a superhit film which
earned Rs. 132.85 Cr. Made on a shoe-string budget, the Anand L Rai production Happy
Bhag Jayegi was a Plus as it raked in Rs. 28.82. Akshay Kumar had three
Rs. 100 Cr grossers in 2016. His film Rustom was declared superhit by
the trade as it pulled in Rs. 127.49 Cr as its lifetime collection. With an
income of Rs. 70 Cr, the John Abraham and Varun Dhawan starrer Dishoom was
declared a hit. Salman Khan's Sultan made Rs. 345 Cr and became an
All time blockbusters. Udta Punjab was a Plus film as it earned Rs.
59.60 Cr. Housefull 3 was also a Plus film with a collection of Rs.
107.70 Cr. Tiger Shroff's Baaghi became a hit with Rs. 76 Cr in its
pocket. With Ki And Ka, which earned Rs. 51.62 Cr, Kareena Kapoor Khan and
Arjun Kapoor found a much needed hit film. With an income of Rs. 73.3 Cr Kapoor
And Sons became a Plus film for the makers. Teraa Surroor too
became a Plus film with Rs. 14.30 Cr and so did Jai Gangaajal with
Rs. 38 Cr income. Neerja turned out to be a superhit film as it went

Re' was an average film. 'Airlift' made Rs. 129 Cr and was
declared superhit. Wazir collected Rs. 42 Cr and became an average film.
So, we can clearly see that on an average around 10-15 films released every
month, out of them only one film could earn a decent amount at the ticket
window. In January, nine films hit screens. Out of these films, one became
superhit, one was average and seven films were either below average or flops.
In February, twelve films made their entry into cinemas. Out of them, one was
average and one superhit. Three films, out of seven, were plus in the month of
March. In April two films were declared hit out of ten films. In May, ten films
released, but none could get the taste of success. In June, out of ten films,
two were plus. July had an All Time Blockbuster Sultan. Other eleven films
released in the same month tanked at the box office. One was superhit, one was
a plus among eight films released in August. September saw the release of
thirteen films. Two were declared superhits. Others were massive flops. In
October, two films were hit among thirteen releases. In November, one film was
