Queer Parade in Delhi to Sensitize People
I always harboured a desire to observe queer parade closely ever since I came to know that my best buddy at my hometown, Hardoi, is actually a transsexual. My dream came true when I got a chance to be a part of Queer Parade 2010 at Connaught Place, New Delhi. Some of My friends like Danish Khan, Keerti Sharma, Anu Bararia, Megha Jain and Mustaquim also joined me in the time of queer jubilation.
On November 28, Delhi saw dauntless courage of LGBT (Lesbians, gays, bisexual, transgender) people who thronged on the streets of Connaught Place to celebrate the third edition of the gay pride parade.
Clad in rainbow colours the LGBT people along with their supporters marched from Barakhamba Road to Jantar Mantar. The happiness of an alternative sexuality was conspicuously palpable on the faces of all participants who did not miss any chance to gyrate to the sound of “dhol” with their faces unmasked.
It is noteworthy that ever since the Delhi High Court in July last year decriminalized the consensual homosexual relationship between two adults, the attitude of the society towards LGBT community has changed drastically. Today society seems to be more open to those who possess a different sexual orientation. In Its landmark judgment in July last year, Delhi High Court repealed the controversial Article 377 of the IPC that prohibits same-sex relationship and thus it paved a way for those who do not conform to the heterosexual norms of the society and want to live their lives on their own terms and conditions.
My friends Danish Khan and Keerti Sharma, who have been volunteering for the Y.P organization for last few months now, express their view on the issue. They said: “We are here to cheer up for those who strongly feel for the cause. Our organization that works for the cause of sexual minorities by sensitizing people to the issues related with gender and sexuality has sent us here to shoot the whole event. We pray for the better future of all LGBT community”
Queer community has been fighting for their basic rights for a long time. Since the decriminalization of same-sex relationship by Delhi High Court, people have gathered enough courage to talk about their sexual preferences. “I recently came out of the closet as a gay but later on I realized that I am attracted towards girls as well. So, now I am happy to recognize myself as a bisexual” said a 23 year-old guy on condition of anonymity.
